The Deaf world ‘hears’ when high energy interpretative artist Phyllis Gaines blends Hip-Hop with American Sign Language transporting spoken word to imaginative entertainment captivating her entire audience.
Phyllis Gaines: Signer, singer, dancer, actress! Professor, business-woman! With a Master’s degree from Gallaudet University (liberal arts school for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing) and Theatre degree, Ms Phyllis Gaines, Tampa, Florida is the prodigy of an entertainment family with performance credits including TV, MTV and the stage (on land and at sea, she was a featured entertainer on cruise ships). Her dance career includes theater, The Wiz, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors and a Hip-Hop video shot in New York, for Heavy D’s “Now That We Found Love”. Gaines’ performance company Sign of Da’ Times has enjoyed successful performances at Tampa Bay Performing Arts TECO Theater, University of South Florida, Museum of Science, Orlando Deaf Expo and many other showcase performances just to name a few and offers coaching, workshops and video interpretation for clients. Phyllis currently teaches American Sign Language to area high school students and is a dance professor at University of Tampa.
